Abstract: Anyone studying the history of the national movement and the Algerian War of Liberation will clearly observe the dominance of violence, torture, and repressive practices committed against Muslim Algerians since 1830. From the scorched earth policy and the Ghar El Frachich massacre, to the slaughter in the Oasis of Zaatcha, and the massacres of May 8, 1945, culminating in the Battle of Algiers (1956–1957), the French machinery of torture claimed the lives of millions of Algerians—all under the banners of the French Revolution: liberty, equality, fraternity. While previous atrocities were committed under the cover of the French Republic—its politicians and generals—the acts of torture carried out during the Battle of Algiers became widely exposed. Some French officers rejected these practices and did not hesitate to speak out against them. More than that, these officers insisted that the torture conducted during the Battle of Algiers was a systematic French policy, endorsed by the authorities, particularly under François Mitterrand, then Minister of Justice. Foremost among these officers was General Jacques Paris de Bollardière. In this research paper, we aim to highlight numerous testimonies regarding torture, as presented by the general in his book The Battle of Algiers: The Battle for Humanity. We will also examine his stance on the use of torture—recognizing that his position was not necessarily motivated by sympathy for the Algerians, but rather by his concern for the honor of France. He sought to win the political battle against the FLN without compromising France’s human values.
