Language Policy Shifts In Algeria Exploring Teachers’ Perceptions At 8 Mai 1945 Guelma University

Abstract

This article aims to introduce the project implemented by Algeria to enhance the status of the English language in society. This is achieved by promoting its widespread use and making it the primary language of instruction in Algerian universities, through training all university professors in English. Strengthening the position of a particular language in any country is an integral part of its language policy, and this is not something that can be accomplished hastily, but rather through a gradual and sustained approach. In our attempt to evaluate this project in practice, we found some encouraging results, while others were inconclusive, given the project's recent implementation.
