Authors : Boudada Amani . Alouache Amel .

Abstract

This article presents a critical discourse analysis of an excerpt from a YouTube video in which former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika delivered a campaign speech promoting the Civil Concord referendum in Tizi Ouezou in 1999. The study aims to examine both the pragmatic and linguistic dimensions of the excerpt, highlighting the way the language is employed to convey implicit meaning. Drawing on Fairclough’s (2001) CDA approach and applying Mullet (2018) framework, we analyze the themes, language, context, and relations embedded in this speech. The analysis revealed the use of several pragmatic tools including implicature, reference, speech acts, repetition, ellipsis and symbolism. Through these techniques, President Bouteflika sought to foster a sense of belonging and unity while promoting women’s empowerment, Kabylian identity and language, national cohesion, and cultural and linguistic diversity.
