The Ukraine Crisis And The Challenges To International Law

Authors : Mosbah Bachir .

Abstract

The Russo-Ukrainian crisis, escalating into a full-scale invasion in February 2022, marks a major turning point that has shaken the foundations of the rules-based international order established after World War II. This crisis has exposed significant weaknesses in core principles like collective security, the prohibition of the use of force, and state sovereignty. The United Nations Security Council's inability to halt the aggression, due to Russia's use of its veto power, demonstrated the fragility of collective security mechanisms. These repercussions have led to a shift in international responses towards strong economic sanctions and the reshaping of geopolitical alliances, such as the strengthening of NATO's role, rather than sole reliance on the UN. The crisis also revealed diverse stances among nations; while the West condemned the invasion and imposed sanctions in support of international law, other countries in Asia and Africa adopted more cautious positions due to their economic and historical interests or their skepticism towards Western norms.
