The Textual Thresholds In Works Of Forbidden Discourse In The Arab Heritage

Authors : Alaoui Noureddine .

Abstract

Abstract : This study examines the evolution of taboo discourse in classical Arabic literature, analyzing how pre-modern religious scholars systematically transformed this sensitive subject into legitimate scientific knowledge. Employing Gérard Genette’s theory of paratexts, the research investigates three key approaches used to codify sexual discourse: religious justification, linguistic documentation, medical framing as therapeutic science, and humorous literature. The study shows how these religious scholars reconciled ethical considerations and scientific approaches, exploiting paratextual thresholds to render sexual knowledge accessible in a respectful framework. The findings highlight the complex interplay between censorship and knowledge production in medieval Islamic culture, offering more profound insight into how societies navigate taboo subjects through nuanced textual strategies.
