Food security is closely linked to the agricultural sector, which is one of the most important sources of food. To achieve this, the limited natural resources and growing demand for food must be considered. In order to ensure that all those suffering from hunger and malnutrition have access to adequate food, more needs to be done to sustainably increase agricultural production. As emphasised at the 2012 Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the right to safe and nutritious food can be realised by promoting sustainable agriculture, empowering small-scale farmers, and achieving gender equality. Ending rural poverty, ensuring healthy lifestyles, addressing climate change and other issues are among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) addressed in the post-2015 development agenda.
