This paper examines Algerian university students' perceptions of the recent adoption of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in higher education. Data were collected through a short survey combining a main open-ended question, designed to gather rich qualitative insights into students’ opinions, concerns, and recommendations regarding EMI implementation, and a supporting closed-ended question to quantify their language-of-instruction preferences. Thematic analysis revealed six key themes: EMI's global benefits, language attitudes and motivation, linguistic and pedagogical challenges, the political dimension of EMI, identity-related concerns, and students suggested solutions. Quantitative results show English is the most preferred language, followed by Arabic, then a bilingual preference of both. The consistency between both data sets reinforces the validity and reliability of the findings. The results highlight the importance of an inclusive policy approach that values and involves students’ voices in promoting a planned, gradual, and well-supported transition to EMI in Algerian higher education.
