The issue of the theatrical audience is a troubling matter that has perplexed both playwrights and critics alike, whether in practice or in theory. This audience remains the essential condition through which the theatrical process is completed, and in no way can its nature be controlled or guaranteed to be always in harmony with what is presented before it in terms of spectacle or discourse. This may be due to the fact that the audience, in addition to being a fundamental element in the theatrical process, forms an independent authority that controls the fate of the theatre itself. Perhaps this was what Plato early recognized when he spoke of the authority of the audience, that is to say, "the theocracy." In light of this overwhelming authority of the audience, some theatre practitioners have raised the slogan "elitist theatre for all" as a banner through which they attempt to outline a strategy that makes the audience a fundamental party in the creative process, thus overcoming a series of social, mental, and class barriers that prevent this possible consensus between the conscience of the creative producer and the recipient. Therefore, this article attempts to discuss this slogan in its origins as well as in its objective paradoxes and simultaneously reveals the ideological and political drivers behind this slogan.
