Generalization Of Results In Psychological And Educational Research: From Quality Conditionality To Statistical Ritualism

Authors : Chaib Mahfoud . Mansouri Yahia .

Abstract

Abstract: This article examines the critical shift in the process of generalizing results in psychological and educational research from being a hallmark of research quality to becoming a ritualistic practice based solely on statistical significance. Such reliance is often pursued without meeting the methodological requirements that should precede statistical generalization and without giving due attention to practical significance (effect size and correlation magnitude). The paper further identifies key gaps frequently overlooked by researchers, illustrating with examples the limitations of statistical significance in capturing the realistic and practical meaning of research findings. In addition, it analyzes the risks posed by certain statistical inferences that may lead to decisive outcomes in research contexts, particularly when extreme scores influence psychological and educational interventions.
