New Materialisms Amani Aburahma Abstract New Materialisms, or Neo-materialisms, are a contemporary concept that emerged thanks to research seeking to transcend disciplinary boundaries, bringing together the sciences and the humanities under what has come to be known as interdisciplinary approach. Manuel DeLanda and Rosi Braidotti – independently of one another – coined the terms neo-materialism and new materialism in the latter half of the 1990s, promoting a cultural theory that does not separate the cultural dimension but instead focuses on what Donna Haraway calls naturecultures, or what Bruno Latour simply describes as collectives. It is difficult to provide a precise definition of new materialism—a difficulty also encountered with postmodern and poststructuralist theories, depending on how it is employed as a framework, and on the researcher applying it. Nonetheless, new materialisms may broadly be described as a cultural theory that seeks to move beyond Cartesian dualistic modes of thought found across different branches of the sciences and humanities. To achieve this, new materialisms place emphasis on matte without disregarding the mind, which dualistic thought has tended to prioritize. In this sense, new materialisms have brought about a shift in the production of knowledge, its forms, and its meanings. At least four main currents fall under this umbrella term: vital materialism, speculative realism, object-oriented ontology, and performative materialism. The aim of this study is to clarify the concept of new materialisms, their philosophical contexts, and the novel approaches they propose to conceiving matter. It also reviews the main trends within this current—highlighting that they are plural materialisms rather than a single materialism—before addressing their ethical and political applications, as well as the major critiques directed at this contemporary philosophical orientation.
