Abstract

Abstract: Ancient pre-Roman amphorae held significant importance among experts in ancient pottery studies. Key research areas include their uses for storage and transport, the production origins, the types of clay used, and the extent of their morphological and technical evolution over the centuries. While certain manufacturing workshops have identified a limited category of amphorae in central and western Mediterranean regions, such as Sicily, Sardinia, and Spain, many remain to be investigated. This is particularly relevant given the similarities in forms and the variations in clay across different regions, along with their various uses. The issue of identification, distribution, and of assessing the extent of ancient amphorae use from the VIIIth century BCE to the IIIrd century BCE—coinciding with the Phoenician-Punic period—remains a subject of ongoing debate today, despite significant research advancements in this field over the past two decades.
