Abstract

Remote sensing and empirical models have facilitated and enabled a broad spatio-temporal survey of biological parameters, contributing to the preservation and conservation of marine ecosystems. In this study, we used 11 years (2010-2020) of MODIS Chlorophyll-a (Chla) data to examine the spatio-temporal variability of phytoplankton groups in Bejaia Gulf and El Kala surface waters (the southwestern Mediterranean Sea). We evaluated five Chla algorithms dedicated to the MODIS sensor, as well as the regional phytoplankton model based on the abundance approach. The annual and monthly variability of Phytoplankton biomass in terms of Size Classes (PSCs) and Functional Types (PFTs) were examined. The annual climatology revealed significant differences in PFTs and PSCs abundances between the two study regions. The micro-phytoplankton, which is primarily represented by diatoms in Bejaia Gulf, dominated the coastal edge, whereas the nano-phytoplankton, which is mainly represented by haptophytes, dominated El kala coast. However, according to the monthly climatology, haptophytes predominated, followed by prokaryotes in both study areas. The variability of PFTs is strongly influenced by precipitation in Bejaia Gulf and by SST in El-Kala waters.
