Abstract

This study focuses on the inventory and distribution of mega benthos in trawlable fishing areas along the Algerian coast. Sampling was conducted on board the research vessel Belkacem Grine during the cruise ALDEM 2021. 532 Species belong to six main phyla were recorded. The Shannon index ranged from 0 to 1.09, indicating low overall biodiversity. The highest equitability index was recorded at station T12 (E=0.87), while the lowest was observed at T9 (E=0). Results show a dominance of molluscs and echinoderms, with species richness and abundance varying significantly between stations. The ecological indices indicate low species richness and uniform distribution of species. The sampling method deployed in the present study may affect the inventory results. Therefore, deployment of adequate sampling methodologies can improve the quality of species inventory, abundance and distribution findings.
