Authors : Serhoud Mohammed Oualid . Tebchouche Nacima .

Abstract

Abstract: Medical sociology, which emerged in the 1950s, studies the social, cultural, and economic influences on health, illness, and healthcare systems, aiming to understand how societal structures shape health practices and perceptions, as highlighted by scholars such as Talcott Parsons in his book "The Social Order." This article aims to analyze the evolution of traditional medicine into alternative medicine from a sociological perspective, exploring its historical roots, contemporary transformations, and challenges. It concludes that alternative medicine, which includes practices such as acupuncture, chiropractic, and herbal remedies, differs from traditional medicine in terms of formal training and modern diagnoses, reflecting cultural identity and resistance to the mechanistic approach of biomedicine. The global spread of alternative medicine, driven by medical tourism and the media, emphasizes its role in bridging tradition with modernity, addressing holistic health needs, and reshaping perceptions of community health, despite challenges such as the shortage of specialists and sensitive research topics.
