History Of Sociolinguistics: Studies On Language In Relation To Society

Authors : Khetir Naima .

Abstract

This article aims at providing a report outlining important topics tackled in the field of research of sociolinguistics known as ‘study of language in its social context’, and understanding the determinants of this branch as well as their applications to historical sociolinguistic research. Many different exploratory studies have revealed special characteristics of language use utilised by different groups of people. Qualitative descriptions of multiple fieldwork data are stated. As pioneers: Ferguson , Fishman , Labov and Bernstein clearly distinguished between concepts and contributed to the ‘study of language in its social context’. Sociolinguists showed more interests to characterise the study in language acquisition and social attitudes towards language. This article also stresses the description and assessment of specific contributions through stages in the realm of ‘analysis in relation to the speaker’s mind and social reference’. The exploration of this discipline and efforts to explain a number of socially significant language forms, serve to identify the status of speakers and communities. Another important issue is what parameters contribute to the understanding of language from the psychological, social, and sociolinguistic perspectives.
