China’s rise as a major power has strengthened its ability to realize its ambition and objective of reintegrating Taiwan, which it considers an inalienable part of its territory, through a comprehensive multidimensional strategy encompassing military, economic and diplomatic dimensions. On the military front, China is working to develop its offensive and defensive capabilities in preparation for any potential confrontation. Economically, it seeks to strengthen trade and investment relations with Taiwan to promote economic integration as a peaceful means of reintegrating it to the motherland. Diplomatically, China relies on the “One China” policy to pressure the international community and prevent the official recognition of Taiwan as an independent state. Possible scenarios for achieving this objective include its peaceful reintegration through the reinforcement of economic and cultural ties, however the failure of this option could push China to resort to military force, which could lead to two possibilities: either the status quo without major escalation, or the intervention of international powers to support Taiwan, thus complicating the political landscape and potentially leading to an unforeseen escalation. Consequently, China prefers to balance the achievement of its objectives while taking into account regional and international interactions, in order to avoid an open conflict that could harm its long-term interests.
