The Immediate Context Of The Saudi Arabia-iran Deal: Strategic Postures And Geopolitical Catalysts

Abstract
On March 10th 2023, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced the re-establishment of diplomatic relations in an agreement brokered by China. Analyzing the agreement requires disentangling the object of consideration through a systematic analysis of two levels of context: the extended context and the immediate context. This article focuses on the immediate context dealing with the strategic postures of both nations and relevant international and regional geo-strategic factors. Understanding the immediate context can help evaluate the future prospects of the agreement. This article examines this deal, motivations of both sides to reach it, its content, and its future prospects.
