This study aims to address the struggle of the diplomat Ferhat Abbas during the period from the 1920s to the 1950s, specifically between 1920 and 1959. This period holds great significance as it covers an important part of our history. To understand this aspect, it is essential to examine Ferhat Abbas's political path in Algeria at the beginning of the 20th century. During this time, he was involved with various ideological movements that differed in their beliefs, methods of action, and approaches to addressing the national issue. This era witnessed the emergence of a new generation of educated Algerian elites, among whom was the diplomat Ferhat Abbas, who began his political career as a student. Ferhat Abbas is considered one of the most prominent figures of these movements, which formed organized political structures. He has been classified in numerous historical and political writings as an intellectual — like many elites influenced and deeply immersed in Western culture — who played a significant and impactful role in the trajectory of the national movement. He contributed to the establishment of several organizations, such as the Association of Muslim Students of North Africa, the Deputies' League, and the Democratic Union of the Algerian Manifesto. Abbas became a determined political activist who, throughout his life, believed in and defended the ideology of equality — known by some as the policy of assimilation — driven by his commitment to democratic principles, even beyond the borders of his homeland. Thus, his entire life was a journey in search of a homeland: first in France, then with France, later outside of France, and ultimately against France. Yet, throughout this path, he remained an heir to certain French political traditions, persistently advocating for the planting of democracy and human rights in an environment that did not support such aspirations. As a result, his calls found no echo in the ears of old France.
