A Critical Analysis Of The Need For United Nations Security Council Reform

Authors : Baraka Mohamed .

Abstract

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the most pivotal institutions in the international system. However, its current structure and permanent membership raise persistent concerns about fairness and representation. Designed in the aftermath of World War II to reflect the power dynamics of that era, the Council's inability to adapt to significant global changes has underscored its limitations in addressing contemporary challenges effectively. This study explores the pressing need for Security Council reform, focusing on the obstacles hindering these efforts. The analysis aims to highlight the benefits of reforming the UNSC, emphasizing its role in strengthening global governance and enhancing responsiveness to international crises. Practical recommendations are provided to facilitate meaningful reform and ensure the legitimacy and fairness of the Council's decisions.
