Abstract

This study examines the evolution of Jewish representation in Egyptian cinema from the early 20th century through the 1950s, focusing on the shifting dynamics of cultural production and identity politics. Through analysis of key films, industry structures, and sociopolitical contexts, the research traces how Jewish participation in Egyptian cinema evolved from a position of significant industrial and creative influence to one of increasing marginalization. The shift paralleled broader regional developments, including the establishment of Israel in 1948 and Egypt's 1952 revolution. Our work reveals how Egyptian cinema's portrayal of Jewish characters and themes reflected broader societal changes, particularly in response to regional political developments. Of particular interest is the paradoxical phenomenon of Egyptian films' continued popularity in Israel despite growing tensions between the two nations. The research contributes to understanding how cinema served as both a mirror and mediator of intercultural relations in the Middle East during this pivotal period.
