This research aims to demonstrate the extent to which the State of Belgium applies the principle of universal jurisdiction in its national legislation with the aim of prosecuting perpetrators of international crimes, especially since the principle of universal criminal jurisdiction is considered a last resort to prevent perpetrators of international crimes from escaping punishment.. This researcher has shown that despite the application of the principle of universal jurisdiction by the State of Belgium and its extensive stipulation in its legislation, due to political interventions by the great powers, it has retreated from that approach and has been exposed to many obstacles in applying this principle, as the applications before the Belgian judiciary prove that Belgium’s application of this principle has not led to holding perpetrators of international crimes accountable.
