The question of unity and solidarity between Africa and Diaspora is recurrent theme when it comes to addressing different forms of white oppression. Although twentieth century movements like Pan-Africanism have worked towards such unity, it did not go beyond cultural collectivity. The failure to form political and economic unity became more evident in the 1960s, for as African nations secured independence and African Americans their civil rights, both communities drifted apart turning to their local socio-cultural struggles. Due to this, the notion of one Black world has become a mere metaphor. In this paper, I discuss Black Lives Matter as a movement that calls for collective freedom of the global Black family. In so doing, I focus on the (complicated) relationship between the movement and Africa, the various challenges that face BLM, and the possible solutions that can serve as a first step towards a united Black world.
