Abstract

In Senegal, legislation requires all companies, whatever their status, to subscribe to a social protection institution to cover work-related risks. However, the texts are not applied, especially for companies in the informal sector. This article attempts to show the place of social protection in the entrepreneurial process in Ziguinchor. The study is based on a quantitative survey of 150 food entrepreneurs operating in Ziguinchor. The results show that 98% had not considered taking out health insurance when they set up their business, and the same figure applied to social insurance. One of the reasons for the low take-up rate is that businesses are not formalised, there are no institutional constraints and there is a lack of information. In this context, these factors play a key role in understanding the link between entrepreneurship and social protection.
