The role of African women in the armed struggle against apartheid in South Africa from 1960 to 1994 was significant and multifaceted. As the apartheid regime intensified its repression, women became increasingly involved in the resistance, challenging both racial oppression and gender inequality. The repression of the apartheid government led them to join organizations such as the African National Congress (ANC) and its military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and they received extensive military training to participate in the armed struggle. They were able to assume roles as fighters and leaders, and some even participated in the party’s guerrilla war against the apartheid regime within South Africa. Participation in this type of struggle was not flexible or simple, and African women faced many challenges that they had to deal with in order to achieve their goal of liberating South Africa from apartheid. Despite these challenges, women remained steadfast in their commitment to the struggle. African women’s contribution to the armed struggle against apartheid was instrumental in the liberation of South Africa. Their sacrifices and leadership laid the foundation for a more inclusive and equal society. The role of African women in the armed struggle against apartheid confirms their strength, resilience and unshakable steadfastness.
