Abstract

Abu Madyan al-Ghawthi, originally from Andalusia and buried in Algeria, is considered one of the most important Sufi figures. Despite the hardships of his early life—losing his father and working as a shepherd for his brothers while remaining illiterate in his childhood—his love for knowledge drove him to pursue education by any means necessary, most notably through migration and seeking knowledge from scholars. He eventually achieved this, becoming one of the most renowned religious scholars. He is credited with founding the Qadiriyya Sufi order in Algeria specifically, and in the Maghreb region in general, which has since become one of the most prominent Sufi orders in Algeria.
