Since antiquity and due to their strategic location, the ancient Libyans were able since early times to mediate between the african continent and the Mediterranean shores commercially. in the beginning the Libyan caravans crossed natural paths, until it evolved during the reign of their descendants, the Garamantes.into a structured network of roads ending at trade stations protected by castles and fortresses to secure convoys of chariots. They traded the desert and african goods with the mediterranean goods. In the middle of the first millennium BC, the trade stations evolved into trading posts. it maintained strong relations with the Carthaginians, who were interested in desert trade and reaped enormous profits from it. However, it should be noted that the Carthaginians did not show much interest in building roads in their areas in Libya, especially after they inherited the Phoenician trading posts of Sabratha, Oea and Leptis Magna, where desert trade ended, they were contented with the role of distributor for these goods. After the fall of Carthage, the Romans sought to acquire the road network controlling the Sahara trade, so they clashed with the Garamantes in more than one war and after their full control of the ancient Maghreb, they established an important road network, the main objective of which was to facilitate the settlement process, and the military dimensions overlapped with the economic dimensions
