Abstract: Since achieving independence, Algeria has embarked on the nationalization and enhancement of diverse energy and cultural assets. In an effort to safeguard its cultural heritage, the nation has undertaken numerous archaeological excavations. Despite these efforts, these measures have proven inadequate for preserving the subterranean treasures, necessitating the exploration of alternative approaches, particularly against the backdrop of the nation’s post-war development and social challenges. This situation precipitated a period of intense partisan sectarianism, referred to as the "Black Decade," which significantly disrupted archaeological research and stymied the advancement of scholarly inquiries. In response, the authorities, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, pioneered a new academic discipline known as preventive archaeology. While this field is nascent in Algeria, it is well-established in other regions globally. This study examines the introduction of this discipline in Algeria, its current state, and its future prospects through the following inquiries: What constitutes preventive archaeology? What is its present status? What are the anticipated benefits and future directions for this field?
