The Us And The Eu Divergence Over Iran: Analyzing The Case Of American Withdrawal From The Jcpoa In 2018

Authors : Boulmaiz Amel . Elaggoune Abdelhak .

Abstract

This paper aims to clarify the US and the EU/E3 divergent strategies regarding Iran’s nuclear agreement ( JCPOA), particularly in light of President Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the deal. The US’s maximum pressure strategy and the re-imposition of secondary sanctions, significantly undermined the agreement, prompting the EU/E3 to take countermeasures to avoid US secondary sanctions and keep the nuclear deal intact. Despite these efforts, the EU’s attempts to preserve the agreement were without much success. The study highlights the primary reasons behind the EU’s inability to uphold the agreement. The research also explores the implications of the US and EU/3 asymmetry with reference to the nuclear accord, focusing on the long-term effects on regional and international stability as well as transatlantic relations. Given the critical importance of US and EU collaboration in addressing global challenges and ensuring global security, this paper recommends for the adoption of a coordinated strategy to tackle the issue of Iran’s nuclear program.
