Exploring Common Mistakes In Conducting Master’s Dissertation Among Efl Students Of Language And Communication Master 2 Program At The University Of Relizane

Abstract

Conducting a Master dissertation is an academic engagement that requires a strong understanding of research methodology course in terms of both theory and practice. This paper aims to identify common mistakes committed by M2 students that may hinder academic quality and success of their end-term project. A document analysis is used as a main data collection instrument in which 10 supervisors’ feedback reports were analysed thematically. Findings indicated that the major frequent mistakes are related to academic language use (grammar flaws, punctuation errors and incorrect sentence structure), poor design of data collection tools, superficial analysis of data and lack of in-depth and analytical literature review. In view of these mistakes, it is suggested to offer learner training in form of seminars and workshops to better equip students with practical guidelines of research process. Besides, reconsideration of the weekly hourly volume of research methodology to enable teachers to cover all possible fundamentals of research.
