This research aims to examine the role of women in education and pedagogy in Ancient North Africa by analyzing archaeological evidence and literary sources. Women played a fundamental role in social upbringing, extending their influence beyond the family to vocational training, religious education, and the arts. Rock art scenes in the Central Sahara depict women's involvement in child-rearing and teaching essential skills. Meanwhile, Latin inscriptions and mosaics from antiquity provide evidence of their participation in formal education, particularly in Caesarea (Cherchell) and Timgad. Additionally, literary sources, such as the letters of Saint Augustine, highlight the presence of female educators in Hippo and Tagaste, where they taught handicrafts and religious doctrines. Despite legal restrictions, such as Emperor Theodosius’ decree of 385 AD, women continued to play a crucial educational role. This study seeks to emphasize the significance of these contributions in shaping the cultural fabric of ancient Maghrebian society, where women actively participated in knowledge transmission and the training of future generations. Furthermore, the research explores the lasting impact of these roles on the continuity of educational traditions across historical periods.
