Abstract

This study examines the production of pigeon peas and the challenge of price instability in Endakiso Ward, Babati District, Tanzania. Pigeon peas are a vital crop for smallholder farmers in the region, but they face significant price volatility, which impacts their livelihoods and production decisions. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data, to investigate the factors contributing to price instability and its effects on farmers. Results indicate that weather conditions, market demand, government policies, global market trends, and local trader practices are the primary drivers of price fluctuations. Farmers perceive weather-related uncertainties as the most influential factor, followed by market demand and government policies. The impact of price instability is evident in farmers' decisions to reduce pigeon pea cultivation or diversify into other crops, which may have long-term implications for food security. Qualitative findings highlight the challenges of weather unpredictability, market information asymmetry, government policy inconsistencies, and local trader influence. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for improved weather forecasting, market information systems, and government policies to stabilize prices and support smallholder farmers in the pigeon pea sector. These interventions are crucial for enhancing farmer resilience and ensuring the sustainability of pigeon pea production in the face of price volatility. The research provides valuable insights for policymakers and development practitioners working to address agricultural price instability in Tanzania and similar contexts.
