The Prison Diary As A Site Of Anachronistic Carceral Truth-making: The Case Of Mohamed Ouald Slahi

Authors : Ould Yahia Djamila .

Abstract

Abstract The objective of this paper is the construction of prison accounts as sites of archaic carceral truths. To theorize our inquiry, we have drawn extensively from historian and philosopher Michel Foucault’s conceptual tools, such as “historical a-priori” to unearth the epistemic genealogies of modern-day carceral practices, and “historical continuum” to which present convicts are systematically subjected to. We consider that Mohamed Ouald Slahi’s Guantanamo Diary (2015), is a pertinent corpus against which our hypotheses are examined, given that it elicits its relevance from prior American carceral registers, a fact which debunks in the process the epistemic discontinuities that operate in Western carceral thought as Foucault postulates in Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison (1975).
