Although ESP learner-centred approach seems successful to satisfy learners’ needs and achieve their target goals, practitioners still face difficulties to assess their abilities. While literature shows moderately not absolutely, the inconsistency of conventional testing methods in ESP context, teachers have deliberately adopted alternative assessments that are supposed to provide valid and reliable testing templates. The present paper deals with the significant studies devoted to alternatives effectiveness in ESP teaching-learning context and it prominently emphasizes portfolio as one of its efficient methods. Accordingly, this theoretical study aims at examining efficacy of alternative assessments via their instructional utility and exploring their effectual implications on ESP learning progress. The findings indicate, first, alternatives assist ESP tutors to address students’ contextual knowledge and professional skills efficiently. Second, they designate their effective impacts on ESP reflective practices and learning advancement.
