ABSTRACT In an attempt to discuss the importance of Arabic language in Nigeria, which through Islam, had established itself in the region as the language of administration, reading, writing, education, history and legislation before the arrival of the colonial masters in Nigeria. In fact, Arabic was once the official language in some parts of Nigeria and had an impact on the language and culture of its people. Arabic language through the acquisition of Islamic education has contributed immensely to the development of the Nigerian nation, especially in the areas of religion, education, socio-economics, diplomacy and security. But unfortunately, the current status of Arabic language in Nigeria has been reduced to a lower level, the government has neglected the language and left it to other foreign languages such as English and French, Therefore, this paper aims to shed light on the current status of Arabic language in some sectors in particular, and in Nigeria in general. Finally, this paper recommends that Arabic language as a language of religion and civilization be given its first place and allowed to contribute its quota to the development of not only Northern Nigeria but Nigeria as a whole. Keywords: Arabic language, civilization, development, history, Nigeria.
