This research investigates the potential of urban agriculture to create shared value in Japan. Examining the innovative and creative approaches of social entrepreneurs involved, as well as the perceptions of city residents towards urban farming, provides valuable insights into the complex nature of this emerging field. A key finding is the diversity of opinions, involvement, and approaches among urban dwellers, highlighting the complex nature of urban agriculture. The study also demonstrates how both radical and incremental innovation play important roles in addressing social challenges and enhancing stakeholder competencies. Moreover, the study identifies three main factors contributing to the success of urban holdings: exceptional product quality, strong customer relationships, and a commitment to continuous improvement. This comprehensive analysis provides a foundation for understanding the opportunities and challenges associated with urban agriculture in Japan and offers valuable lessons for legislators, advocates, and researchers interested in giving promotion to sustainable and equitable non-rural development.
