During the time of the Crusades, political borders in the Levant did not have the same meaning as they do today, and there was frequent interaction between the areas controlled by the Franks and those of the Muslims. Additionally, the Franks did not constitute a majority in their territories; most of the population consisted of locals who continued their previous occupations. The Franks lived as feudal lords or warrior knights in cities and fortresses that served as control points. Although the Franks were united by religion, they were from various national and ethnic backgrounds, preventing them from establishing a single state. It appears that the divisions prevalent among the Muslims at the time also affected the Franks.
