The Ottoman Empire realised earlier than other nations that its military power on land alone was not enough to control the trade routes and key strategic passages across the world’s oceans. Consequently, it focused on developing its naval capabilities to become the master of the world’s seas in the 16th and 17th centuries, thanks to the expertise of its sailors and navigators. Muhyiddin Piri Reis is one of the most famous Turkish geographers and navigators of the Ottoman Empire, known for his significant role in drawing maritime and geographical maps and discovering previously unknown geographical areas. The Sultanate of Oman also witnessed the emergence of one of the most famous figures of Arab navigation in the 16th century, known throughout the waters of the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, the Arab navigator “Ahmad bin Majid al-Najdi al-Saadi al-Omani”. All this prompted us to write this research paper in order to illustrate to the reader the extent of the contributions of Arab and Muslim geographers and navigators in the development of cartography and maritime navigation, as well as in the discovery of previously unknown regions of the world in the modern era.
