When Professor Mohamed El Dahi told me about the honouring of dear brother Said Bengrad on the sidelines of the International Forum on Semiotics held at the University of Biskra, I was very happy because I was convinced that this scholar, who has become a scientific icon, deserves this honour, which is a clear recognition of the scientific efforts he has made over more than three decades to promote research and establish a scientific discourse not only in Morocco but in other Arab countries. One only has to look at the abundant scientific research, including Masters and PhD theses, that have examined and analysed his semiotic achievements to ascertain his wide scientific influence in various scientific circles. This deep impact he left on researchers stems primarily from his superior ability to tame the Arabic language and simplify scientific discourse for the Arab reader despite the conceptual complexities of Grimas's books in particular and the Paris School in general. I am fully aware of the effort required to create such a discourse and the constraints that shackle him and leave him with limited room for manoeuvre. He is thinking of the Arab recipient who is accustomed to boring, stereotypical, traditional critical texts, filling in the gaps resulting from the lack of benchmarks for contemporary semiotic research, finding solutions to the terminological dilemma that has fragmented in quite a few Arabic studies into numerous translations of the same term, making it difficult to eliminate their confusion with serious semiotic research, and responding to the reader's desire to enter into a connection with those values that allow him to uncover the essence of the semiotic practice. In order to decipher these contradictions, which brought research to a state of stalemate in the early 1990s, Professor Bengrad found himself, in the absence of a collective scientific inquiry, forced to
