Abstract: This study investigates the hydraulic infrastructure and water management system of Hippo Regius (modern-day Annaba) and its pivotal role in sustaining urban life. Thanks to its coastal location and the efficient administration of its aqueducts and hydraulic installations, the city maintained a consistent water supply, as attested by epigraphic evidence; The research examines the key elements of the hydraulic network, including water sources, aqueducts for transportation, cisterns, and reservoirs, with particular emphasis on the latter as exemplary models of hydraulic engineering in Roman North Africa. The study further explores the distribution mechanisms, such as castellum divisoria, and their role in channeling water to public amenities like thermae (baths), nymphaea (fountains), and private households. It also highlights the integrated drainage and sewer systems (cloacae), which reflect the city’s advanced urban planning. Modern schematics and visual reconstructions complement the analysis, alongside archaeological findings and epigraphic sources, particularly Latin inscriptions that identify the curatores aquarum and other officials responsible for overseeing the water supply infrastructure.
