Working with an online DDL course (Crosthwaite, 2020), this pilot study sets out to examine whether using corpus linguistics tools would be useful for the development of Algerian sophomore EFL learners’ use of English near-synonyms. Drawing on this course, pre/posttests, students’ pre questionnaire and post semi-structured interviews were carried out. Findings reveal that in the pretest, near-synonyms were used interchangeably, regardless the context they occurred in. Conversely, after treatment, positive results were obtained, in which learners could produce accurate co-occurrences of those collocates across different disciplines. The paper concludes that DDL activities helped learners differentiate between near-synonyms and built positive attitudes among learners towards learning these items using the DDL approach.
