‘building Blocks’ Of Ideology: Deconstructing Pink Floyd's Album The Wall With Althusser’s Lens

Authors : Saci Nassima .

Abstract

Pink Floyd’s The Wall (1979), a rock opera written by Roger Waters, is unparalleled evidence to the band’s thematic and artistic ingenuity that explores the psychological breakdown of the character Pink, roughly inspired by Waters' and Syd Barrett's experiences. This study aims to analyse The Wall through the lens of Althusser’s concepts of hailing and Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs), by examining how interactions with key characters represent hegemonic forces that exacerbate Pink's alienation and struggles. The paper examines Pink's conflictual interactions with his mother, his teacher, his doctor, and the judge to reveal how these figures symbolise familial, educational, medical, and legal ISAs, respectively. The paper stresses the album's critique of internalised social structures and ideological conformity.
