Ireland And Iuvenal Ii 160

Authors : Breeze Andrew .

Abstract

Althought _Iuverna_ or _Hibernia_, older forms of the name of Ireland, have been of obscure origin, comparison with Welsh _yw_ 'yew tree' and _gwerin_ 'people; army' (and their cognates) suggests a sense '(land of the) red hosts', denoting the Iverni or Érainn, a people of Ireland's southern coast, with this form ultimately applied by Mediterranean seafarers and traders to all inhabitants of the island.
