Advancing Translation Practice: A Comprehensive Review And Classification Of Translation Technology Tools

Authors : Belarbi Ahmed Noureddine . Chouchani Abidi Mohammed .

Abstract

Translation technology has become an essential component of modern translation, significantly improving the efficiency and accuracy of professional translators. As the demand for high-quality translation services continues to grow, it is imperative to understand and categorize the diverse range of computer tools available to meet the specific needs of translators. This research paper provides a comprehensive review and classification of translation tools used in professional translation practice. The paper explores various classifications, starting with Melby's categorization based on the application stages of translation as well as their association with terminological or segmental levels. This classification offers valuable insights into different types of translation technologies and their applications. In addition, Vilarnau's classification is analyzed, which groups computer programs into five categories based on their relationship with translation. The study highlights the varying relevance of these programs in translation tasks.Furthermore, the research incorporates Neunzig's three-dimensional approach, encompassing the application of translation technology in teaching, professional translation, and translation research. The paper emphasizes that the suitability of a tool depends on its specific usage, functions, and methods employed by different user profiles. The findings reveal that early approaches focused on the integration of technology-assisted tools with human translators, while modern trends prioritize machine translation to optimize time and productivity.Throughout the analysis, it becomes evident that a comprehensive understanding of translation technology necessitates differentiating the specific roles and requirements of each translation tool, user profile, and translation dimension. This research paper serves as a resource for translation practitioners, educators, and researchers, providing a holistic view of available tools and their respective applications.
