This article examines the social conditions surrounding the circulation of ideas. Briefly, it attempts to delimit the diffusion of ideas which, rooted in their native land, nevertheless circulate at the intemational level, in particular, when they are expressed in theoretical mode. Pierre Bourdieu's theory of fields is cited as an example. In a broader context, the subject is considered in light of the rapid and incessant diffusion of ideas under the auspices of the "new information technologies," represented by the internet and the immediate questions this gives rise to: is the internet a vehicle for the free circulation of ideas or, on the contrary, is it a platform for cultura] imperialism and economic domination characterized by the uniformization of information and know]edge?
