Diplomatic interpreting is a niche field in Interpreting Studies. After having worked as a freelance diplomatic interpreter in Estonia for several years, the author offers an insider’s view into linguistic challenges she encountered and into how both interpreting and translation helped her succeed in her diplomatic interpreting assignments. During the scrutinised period (1992–2006), diplomatic interpreting supported the Republic of Estonia’s aspirations to be recognised and accepted in world politics as a sovereign state that had regained independence in 1991. The author reflects on diplomatic interpreting from the angle of (un)interpretability of culture-bound terms and the speaker’s idiolect.
