Etudes Internationales Et Histoire: Notes Programmatiques Pour Une Approche Interdisciplinaire.

Auteurs : Chennoufi Miloud .

Résumé

This study outlines an interdisciplinary approach aiming to reconcile international studies and history. The break between these two disciplines took place under the promise of predictive knowledge in international studies made up of universal scientific laws similar to those that exist in the natural sciences. Resulting explanations were necessarily deterministic. To keep this promise international relations theories has to respect the parsimony criterion. In doing so, the narrative character of history has been ignored. History is thus reduced to a database to be used according to one's theoretical predilection. The failure of parsimonious theories impose a redesign of the relationship between international studies and history. The criterion of theoretical parsimony must be abandoned in international studies, in order to successful rehabilitate historical narratives and fully take into account the complexity of history, the details and the specific contigencies and unique context of each case under study. The resulting knowledge with be necessarily more local and resulting explanations more of an emerging nature and thus not deterministic.
