Résumé

This study looks into Chekkat and Boudjenoun’s 2022 translation of the meanings of the Holy Qur’an into French compared to earlier French translations. It examines five verses (āyāt) involving divine agency, gender-related language, ritual interpretation, metaphor, and theologically sensitive expressions. The study sets the new renderings present in the 2022 translation against predecessors’ choices, focusing on changes in wording, explanatory additions, and notes. Where the difference between the French versions does not fully show how the rendering relates to the Qur’anic text, a counter-translation makes that relationship more explicit and illustrates another possible reading. The findings indicate that many lexical choices have precedents in earlier French translations. In other instances, however, the new translation makes information more explicit, specify a particular reading through parenthetical additions, or use notes to guide interpretation. It consequently combines established French renderings with selective reformulation, explicitation and paratextual mediation.
