Abstract : This study investigates the contribution of artificial intelligence (AI) use to improving writing performance among second-year Master’s students specializing in Arabic language at five Algerian universities, and explores their perceptions of AI-supported writing. The study involved 138 students and adopted a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design. Students were assigned to an experimental group (n=69) and a control group (n=69), completing pre-test and post-test writing tasks assessed using an academic writing rubric. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with selected experimental-group students. Results showed greater improvement in the experimental group. A mixed-design repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a significant Group × Time interaction, F(1,136)=52.14, p < .001, ηp²=.277. The experimental group improved by 17.33 points, compared with 7.29 points for the control group. Students perceived AI as useful for linguistic revision, idea generation, writing organization, and immediate feedback, but reported concerns about over-reliance, information reliability, and academic integrity. The study concludes that critical AI use can support academic writing, although the quasi-experimental design limits causal generalization.
