This study examines the pragmatic functions of the imperative and paradox in resistance discourse through an analysis of Samiḥ al-Qāsim’s poem “Advance”. It addresses how the imperative shifts from its direct directive function to an act of challenge and confrontation, and how it interacts with repetition and paradox to reshape power relations within the discourse. The study adopts a pragmatic approach based on Speech Act Theory, particularly the concepts of illocutionary force and directive acts, with selected argumentative mechanisms. The analysis demonstrates that the repetition of “Advance” and the sequence of imperatives intensify the act of challenge, while paradox reveals the tension between the opponent’s material power and the resistant subject’s discursive power. Repetition also redefines “advance” from a military movement into a symbolic act associated with the persistence of resistance and human presence. The study concludes that the imperative becomes a discursive strategy of challenge, provocation, and denunciation.
