Inserted sequences within the turn taken mechanism are of great value in studying the political discourse. The present study aims to investigate the function and role of inserted sequences in political interviews. To do so, the study employs a qualitative method, utilizing the conversation analysis (CA) model by Sacks et al.(1974) to examine the linguistic, contextual, and interactional features of inserted sequences in political interviews. Data were collected from two top political interviews selected from YouTube based on their popularity and relevance. They are "America reacts: Dr. Phil's interview with Donald Trump" (2024) and "Watch the first 2024 presidential debate between Biden and Trump" (2024). From these data, six extracts were purposely selected for analysis. The findings indicate that political interviewees strategically employ various types of inserted sequences, such as clarifications (questions and answers), elaborations (repair), and digressions (delay), to navigate and manage the interview context. The use of these inserted sequences allows interviewees to control the discourse, avoid sensitive topics, and project a desired image and identity. Furthermore, the findings shed light on the complex discursive practices involved in political communication, highlighting the ways in which language is used to negotiate power dynamics and construct political realities within the interview setting.
